President Lazarus Chakwera and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) have lost the bid to halt announcement of final results of the 2025 General Elections.
President Chakwera sought a last-minute court action to obtain a court injunction to restrain the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) from releasing final electoral results but it has been rejected.
Chakwera had sought a judicial and order of court to stop the announcement of official results until matters of the Party’s concerns were resolved.
The High Court has granted the judicial review but has however declined to halt the announcement of the final results.
Following the general election on September 16, 2025, former president Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is projected to return to power.
Official results are still being finalized by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), though broadcasters and newspapers report that Mutharika has secured more than the required 50% +1 of the vote.
