Two elderly female tourists were tragically killed in an elephant attack during a walking safari in South Luangwa National Park early Thursday morning.
The victims, identified as Alison Jean Taylor (67) of New Zealand and Easton Janet Taylor (68) of the United Kingdom, were part of a guided excursion near Big Lagoon Bush Camp in Mpika District when the incident occurred at approximately 06:20 AM.
According to preliminary reports, the group encountered a nursing elephant with a calf. Despite the presence of an accompanying wildlife officer and efforts to deter the animal with warning shots, the elephant charged. Due to limited mobility, Alison Taylor was caught first, followed by Easton Taylor. Both women sustained fatal injuries on the scene.
The two had been staying at the bush camp for four days and were en route to another camp at the time of the tragedy. Their bodies have since been transported to Mambwe District Hospital.
The Department of National Parks and Wildlife is investigating the incident. Authorities have reiterated calls for caution when engaging in walking safaris in wildlife-rich zones, especially where protective mothers and their young may be encountered.
